Getting started

What is OurJamJar?

OurJamJar is a budgeting app for New Zealand households. It brings in your bank transactions, sorts them into categories, and shows how much is left in each part of your budget this week and this month. It also covers bills, subscriptions, your mortgage and other debts, and simple “what if” savings plans.

Can I sign up now?

Not yet. We’re opening OurJamJar to a small group of early users first. Join the early-access list and we’ll email you when there’s a spot.

Who is it for?

Households who want a clear weekly picture: couples, families and flatmates sharing costs, and anyone who has outgrown a spreadsheet but still likes the control of one.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. OurJamJar runs in your web browser on phone, tablet or computer. On a phone you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

Can more than one person use the same budget?

Yes. You can invite a partner or another household member so you’re both looking at the same numbers, each with your own sign-in.

Bank feeds & data

Is it safe to connect my bank?

Live bank feeds are coming soon. When they arrive, bank connections will go through Akahu, a New Zealand open-finance provider. OurJamJar will only ask for read-only access — it can see transactions and balances, but it can’t move money or make payments. You never give us your internet-banking password. See Security & privacy for more.

Which banks are supported?

Live bank feeds are coming soon. They’ll come through Akahu, which connects to the main New Zealand banks, including ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank and Westpac. Until then — and any time you prefer — you can upload CSV statements exported from internet banking.

How often do transactions update?

Banks usually make new transactions available to Akahu about once a day, so expect your feed to be up to a day behind. You can also refresh on demand.

Do I have to connect my bank?

No. You can import CSV files exported from internet banking instead, and duplicates are skipped if you import the same period twice.

Can I disconnect or delete my data?

Yes. You can revoke OurJamJar’s access at any time from your Akahu account, and you can ask us to delete your account and data. See the privacy policy.

Budgeting

Weekly or monthly — which does it use?

Both. Set each category weekly or monthly, whichever matches how you’re paid and how the bill arrives, and OurJamJar converts between them (52 weeks ÷ 12 months). You can view your budget week by week or month by month.

What’s the spreadsheet view?

It’s your whole budget as an editable grid: categories down the side, budget, actual spend and what’s left across the top, plus previous months. Click a cell and type, use arrow keys and Tab to move, or paste a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets.

What about one-off purchases?

Mark a big, unusual purchase — a new fridge, a car repair — as a one-off. It’s still tracked, but it won’t blow out your everyday budget or skew your averages.

Is OurJamJar financial advice?

No. OurJamJar is a tool for seeing and planning your own money. Projections and scenarios are estimates based on the numbers you enter. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed financial adviser.
